The second-annual [livejournal.com profile] alera_ficathon has launched! Details here. If you're interested in participating, you have until August 22nd to sign up.

The bonus of being the comm admin, is I can make these completely off topic posts in hopes of reaching more people.

I've been a member of an online forum for football fans for over a year, and like many places on the internet (LJ included), we're suffering from a lack of participation. Our image host recently died, and our admins are wondering if they should even bother putting up the nice banners and backgrounds again, or just close the forum altogether.

So if you like football and want a nice place to chat, 'watch' matches together, look at pics of all the guys, etc., please stop by TCC and join up. But please, please participate.

The Center Circle

And don't feel put out if your team doesn't have it's own board, there are a few generalized boards and areas where you can start a thread for your team.

So... this series is fantastic, and I'm very sad that there will be no more books (unless I missed something.)  I also couldn't help noticing how great this series could be turned into a forum-based RPG.  It could be set sometime post-FLF (and could be far enough in the future that we don't have to use canon characters, but their descendents.)

Does anyone know if Jim would be okay with this?  If so, is anyone interested in helping to make this happen?

Someone asked for some family trees for the Aleran Noble Houses, and I thought it sounded like fun. The trees I came up with are probably incomplete (I tried to include House colours and mascots, but I can't find some of them) and I wouldn't be surprised if they have some errors in them, but here it is in any case (banners and borders snitched from the fantastic in-text map):
By the way, is there a protocol/rule for when to refer to someone as, for example, 'Kalarus Brencis' as opposed to 'Brencis Kalare'?

Oh - (Minor) SPOILERS for First Lord's Fury, if you haven't read it...

Don't know why I thought I should wait to make this post. *headdesk*

To make them easy to go through, lets steal the format from IMDBs memorable quotes pages.

CHARACTER 2:

or

Quote the entire section of text (much more typing, but at times makes more sense).

Page number would be nice, but I know sometimes the books are not readily at hand to reference.

Quotes

We all know that the snark and great one liners are liberally sprinkled throughout all of Jim's books, and there are plenty of sources out there for Dresden quotes (Results 1 - 10 of about 105,000 for dresden files quotes via google). But what about Codex Alera quotes? (Results 1 - 10 of about 12,500 for codex alera quotes. via google). I think we need to spread the funny.

I'm sure there are loads in First Lord's Fury, but lets give it another couple of weeks and I'll do a post for just quotes from FLF. For now, comment with your favourite quotes from the first 5 Codex books.

First Lord's Fury (book 6) is out in hardback today, and Princep's Fury (book 5) is out in paperback - from [livejournal.com profile] arcaedia's announcement. =)

Just in time for the release of First Lord's Fury featuring some of the map art from [livejournal.com profile] priscellie's amazing map. Includes art by UK cover artist Lee Gibbons.

I didn't want to use Flexible Squares, but my sources for free layouts were not cooperating by giving me something simple yet nice to use with the banner. I may change the layout itself if I come across one, but the colours and the banner aren't going anywhere.

Thanks to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] priscellie, we now have a map of Alera!

Multiple sizes posted here

Personally, I've set it as my background and keep staring at it. It's just so darn pretty.

The map will be in First Lord's Fury, on shelves next week.

A reminder: Today is the last day to sign up for the [livejournal.com profile] alera_ficathon! Sign-ups close at midnight EST tonight. We have nine fabulous participants already--let's see if we can't recruit more!

Sign up here, then tell your friends!

In preparation for the release of the final book in the Codex Alera, I've launched the first-ever Codex Alera ficathon! If you're interested in participating (or just want to see the results when they're posted in late October), check out [livejournal.com profile] alera_ficathon.
[identity profile] monkeyscorpion.livejournal.com
Amazon.com has released cover art for the final book! Click here to see it! Once I get my hands on a higher quality version, I will edit the banner for the comm, and make an icon or two.

My comment on the cover: Tavi's looking very mid-30s or older for someone who wouldn't even be legal to drink in the States. I noticed this with the last cover, but even more so now. Positively middle-aged.

Go forth and squee over the pretty picture. Oh, and jot down November 24th on your calendars as the day you will descend on your local book seller to procure your copy.

I've gone through and reconfigured our tagging system. I'm hoping it's more user friendly and easier to use. Both as a search tool and to add to your posts.

Please use the tags provided on all your posts. Thanks.

Hi all,

I'm working on the discovery phases of a new MUSH based on the Codex Alera world!  Code isn't a problem, server space isn't a problem, building isn't a problem and theme isn't a problem. What I'm posting about is specifically:

Would you play on a Codex Alera MUSH?

If there's no player interest, then it's probably not worth it! If you're interested, please send me an email at aleramu@gmail.com -- it doesn't have to say much, just "I'm interested". If you want to do more than just play (i.e. be part of the initial theme development or whatever), please let me know that as well.

As the books are still being published and the theme is still being formed, we're planning on doing the theme fairly early in the scheme of things (before the books & before most of the people in the books). This will also give us some additional flexibility that doesn't otherwise exist.

In any case, please send me an email so I can figure out whether there's enough initial interest to make a new Alera game worthwhile!

For those of you that don't know what a MUSH Is:    In summary, it's a text based roleplaying game where you enact out the lives and intractions of your characters within a defined game world.

Hello, all and sundry. I've spent the last week working on a survey on geek culture, for the purpose of introducing geekdom as a subculture to a masters class on intercultural communication.

If you feel so inclined, please click the link below to answer the survey. Feel free to pass this link on to anyone whom you think might be willing to answer it; the survey is public, but only I have access to your responses. I'll leave this up until the end of February, then decide, based on how much data I've collected, whether to extend it or close it down and start collating

Note: Please do not go back and edit your answers; the Google forms app doesn't allow for that, nor does it prevent multiple responses from the same IP address, so if you try to return to the form, it will interpret that as a new set of answers. If you absolutely HAVE TO change something, please contact me to have your answers deleted (but this makes a mess in the response summary, so I'd prefer not to).

Thanks in advance! Here's to intercultural communication!

(This is cross-posted in numerous places; apologies if you see it more than once.)

As considered, more Codex Icons!!
The rest are here. )

Hi there! I haven't posted here yet, so I'd thought I'd add an intro to this post. I've been a big Jim Butcher fan for a while. Once I finally picked up Furies of Calderon I was hooked on the series, just like The Dresden Files. There are so many good things I could say, but I'll keep this breif.
Last night I spent a few hours creating a bunch of icons including these two:

I'm thinking of making each frame it's own icon. Too much? Either way, I think they're awesome.

LJ dying?

Jan. 6th, 2009 06:01 pm
[identity profile] monkeyscorpion.livejournal.com
Well, my friends list has exploded with posts about LJ going under and backing everything up and all that.

I do not plan on backing up the community, but if there's interest (as I think I've mentioned previously), I WILL start a comm over on InsaneJournal for us. Even if you think it's a good idea for me to just create the comm to hold the name if something happens and we all have to migrate, just let me know.

As of this point, I'm not too worried...I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

The title for book six was posted on Jim's site today, and as many of us have guessed, or speculated, the title is:

First Lord's Fury

It is due out December 2009. I updated the user info, and I'm off to add it to the interest list.

New layout

Dec. 8th, 2008 05:28 pm
[identity profile] monkeyscorpion.livejournal.com
Ok, the new layout is up. I'm 85% pleased with how the banner turned out, and 40% pleased with the layout itself, so I may go hunting for a layout that I can plop the banner on that will hopefully look better than this one. :)

But for now, it's up, and I believe the links and such are much easier to read than they were with the last layout. Mucho thanks to [livejournal.com profile] spark_force and [livejournal.com profile] priscellie for getting me the cover art as quickly as you did.

ETA - I also updated the interest list. I'll be adding more, but it requires a re-read, and my copy of FoC is currently elsewhere. I should be getting it back soon.
