Hi! I was looking around for a place for Codex Alera discussion, after finishing Academ's Fury the other day, and was very much cheered to discover that there's an LJ-community dedicated to this. So -- hello!
Why did you start reading the Codex Alera series?
Fan of the Dresden Files books, so figured I should give the new series a try.
Who is your favourite character?
I tend to like minor characters best, so my favorite (in Calderon) was actually Aldrick ex Gladius. Among less marginal characters, I'm very partial to both Doroga and Kitai (especially after Academ's Fury)
Do you think Gaius makes a good First Lord?
Yes, thougha flawed one as well. He manages to stay a step ahead of the High Lords (mostly), and that's already impressive.
Do you believe Tavi will ever have a fury of his own?
I suspect so. (Don't think I can say more about why without drifting into spoilers and speculation.)
If you had to align yourself with one of the High Lords, which would it be?
The Aquitanes. Invidia is rather impressive, and they seem like quite the competent couple.
What is your favourite scene/moment in Furies of Calderon?
The fight between Aldrick and Fade.
If you had a fury, what element do you believe it would be?
Fire and/or wood.
If you were sent to Alera, and could take one item from our world with you, what would it be?
As they seem to have equaled basic technology with furycraft rather competently, I doubt I'd miss for much, so nothing in particular springs to mind. Maybe a camera :)
What do you hope to get out of this community?
Conversation, discussion.
Please explain your lj name.
It's based on a childhood nickname; no actual hamsters involved (or harmed).
And there's something I've been wondering about since Furies of Calderon, and especially since finishing Academ's Fury:
In looking at some earlier posts in this community, looks like there's consensus that Tavi is Gaius's grandson and heir. I'd actually guessed as much since before the end of Calderon, and the thing that first tipped me off to the possibility was actually his name. "Tavi" is fairly unlike the other male names in Alera, either Citizen or freeholder. But looking at the way nicknames are apparently formed in Alera (Fidelias --> Del, Araris --> Rari), "Tavi" is exactly what I'd expect the nickname of Octavius to be.
Did anybody else think so? Or am I reading way too much into a simple name? :)

Date: 2006-02-24 02:59 am (UTC)I'm not really sure what to think about the name. It makes sense that it would be a shortened version of Octavius, but I kinda like Tavi as just his name. Nothing special. So yeah, really, I don't know. :)

Date: 2006-02-24 03:54 am (UTC)I also rather like Tavi as just his name (it would be really odd to think of him as Octavius, if that ever turned out to be the case). And, on the one hand, if he is called Tavi (i.e. the nickname, rather than Octavius) to protect his secret identity, it's a bit transparent... On the other, there's absolutely no reason for us to know that the shortened form of Fidelias is Del and of Araris Rari, and yet we are given this information, so I can't help but wonder if it's meant to be A Clue... We'll see, I guess!
