Ten Questions

Why did you start reading the Codex Alera series?
There on the shelf of the UW Bookstore sat a book with a lovely cover... yes, the cover of the books made me take notice of it, sadly it was the cover of Academ's Fury, not the paperback Furies of Calderon that I really liked.
However, lucky for me, I found a review by Patricia Briggs which moved me to buy the paperback.

Who is your favorite character?
Tavi, as unoriginal as that it, I like him best. Varg is a close second though.

Do you think Gaius makes a good First Lord?
No, but that's not saying he was always bad. I believe that the older they get, the more afraid rulers become because they KNOW how frightening the world is and that they aren't paranoid since there are people out to kill them.

Do you believe Tavi will ever have a fury of his own?
Of course, and they'll be that much greater for the delay.

If you had to align yourself with one of the High Lords, which would it be?
Lord Placidus, because Aria funny. Otherwise I think Lord Antillus is very solid.

What is your favorite scene/moment in Furies of Calderon?
When Araris revealed himself. For me the whole book was like walking miles and miles through 3 foot deep mud, I don't know why but it was a real effort to keep reading. And then Araris showed himself and I realized that it was all chocolate.

If you had a fury, what element do you believe it would be?
Fire and/or Metal. I'm a Metalsmith, so both are a major part of my profession.

If you were sent to Alera, and could take one item from our world with you, what would it be?
My toolbox, though I suppose that's cheating. However, I'd die if I couldn't make jewelry and pound metal into knives.

What do you hope to get out of this community?
I've got all these questions about the codex Alera world and they need an outlet.

Please explain your lj name.
Kurikara is a character from a Japanese comic, he's this little guy, looks like a toddler, but he is in fact the dragon god of fire and the forge. I identify with small people who like doing big things, plus he's a fire dragon. Ryuoh is Kurikara's the title: Fire Dragon or Dragon King.

I felt the same way about the first half of the book...it took me a long time to get into the characters and plot, I think bc I like Tavi so much better than Amara, and a lot of the first half was her POV. Also, so much happens in the beginning that's almost completely incidental to the plot: Bernard's healing, for example.

But then, once I hit the middle, and I realized Tavi was going to save the day through intercultural diplomacy, I suddenly couldn't put it down.
